Door Installation & Repair in Kansas City

New door, sticky door, broken door — we handle all of it.

Doors get ignored until they don't work.

A door that drags, sticks, won’t latch, or swings open on its own isn’t just annoying — it’s a security issue, an energy issue, and eventually a bigger repair bill. And if you’re replacing a door entirely, a bad installation means gaps, drafts, and a door that never quite sits right.

Heartland Pro Handyman installs and repairs interior and exterior doors across Kansas City and the surrounding suburbs. We hang doors properly, square them to the frame, and make sure they open, close, and lock the way they should.

Door Installation

Need a new door hung? We install:

  • Exterior doors — front entry, back door, side entry
  • Interior doors — bedroom, bathroom, closet, laundry room
  • Storm doors — installation over existing exterior doors
  • Screen doors — new installation or replacement
  • Sliding patio doors — track alignment and installation
  • Barn doors — hardware mounting and door hanging
  • French doors — interior and exterior
  • Pre-hung doors — full frame and door unit installation
  • Slab doors — door only into existing frame

If you’ve already bought a door, we install it. If you need a recommendation on what to buy, we’ll point you in the right direction before you purchase.

Door Repair

Door giving you trouble? Common repairs we handle:

  • Sticking or dragging doors — planed, adjusted, or re-hung
  • Doors that won’t latch — strike plate adjustment or replacement
  • Doors that won’t stay closed — hinge adjustment, frame repair
  • Loose or stripped hinges — re-mortised and secured properly
  • Damaged door frames — split, cracked, or rotted frame repair
  • Weatherstripping replacement — drafty doors sealed properly
  • Door hardware — knobs, handles, deadbolts, locksets replaced
  • Hollow core door damage — patched or replaced
  • Cat or dog doors — installed in existing doors

If your door is dragging seasonally — sticks in summer, fine in winter — that’s usually humidity swelling the wood. We’ll assess whether it needs planing, adjustment, or a different fix.

Our Process

1. Book online or request a quote Simple installs book directly online. If you have a more complex situation — multiple doors, unusual frame, rotted jamb — text us a photo and we’ll confirm scope before scheduling.

2. We confirm and show up on time Confirmation text when booked, “on my way” text before we arrive. No four-hour windows.

3. Assessment first Before we touch anything, we look at the door, the frame, the hinges, and the rough opening. What you see on the surface isn’t always the whole story — a door that won’t close might be a hinge issue, a frame issue, or a foundation settling issue. We tell you what we find before we start.

4. Installation or repair done right Door hung plumb and level. Hinges mortised correctly. Gap even around all four sides. Latch and deadbolt aligned. Weatherstripping seated. We don’t rush the hang — a door that’s a hair off will drive you crazy for years.

5. Test and done We open and close the door repeatedly, check the latch and lock, and make sure it swings freely without binding before we call it finished.

Pricing

Standard interior door installation and most door repairs fall within or just above our minimum flat-rate call-out charge. We’ll confirm pricing when you book.

Jobs that involve more complexity — and where we’ll tell you upfront:

  • Rotted door jamb or frame — if the frame is soft or damaged, it needs repair before a new door goes in
  • Non-standard rough opening — if the opening needs to be resized for the new door
  • Exterior door with damaged threshold — threshold replacement is often needed alongside the door
  • Multiple doors in one visit — we can discount when bundling several doors in the same job

Why Choose Heartland Pro Handyman

We hang doors plumb and level — every time. A door that’s slightly off will stick, bind, or gap forever. We take the extra time to get it right rather than close enough.

We assess before we quote anything additional. If we open the door and find a rotted jamb, we tell you what it’ll cost to fix before we touch it. No surprise additions at the end of the job.

We bring the right tools. Door installation done right requires a level, chisels, a proper drill, and patience. We don’t improvise.

Flat-rate pricing. You know the cost before we start. No hourly surprises.

Licensed, insured, and background-checked. Every technician carries general liability coverage. Your home is protected.

Local to Kansas City. Older KC homes often have out-of-square frames and non-standard rough openings. We’ve seen it before and know how to work with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a pre-hung door or a slab door? Pre-hung means the door comes attached to a new frame — easier installation, better result if the existing frame is damaged or out of square. Slab is door only, fitted into your existing frame — cheaper but requires more precision. If your current frame is in good shape and square, slab works fine. If it’s old, damaged, or out of level, pre-hung is the better call. We’ll tell you which one your situation calls for.

My door sticks only in summer — do I need a new door? Probably not. Wood doors swell with humidity, which is very common in Kansas City summers. Usually the fix is planing the sticking edge or adjusting the hinges. We’ll assess whether it needs a quick fix or something more involved.

Can you install a door I already bought? Yes — that’s the most common scenario. Just make sure you have the right rough-in measurement before you purchase. If you’re not sure, we can measure before you buy.

How do I know what size door to buy? Measure the width and height of your existing door. Standard interior doors are 80 inches tall and 24, 28, 30, 32, or 36 inches wide. Exterior doors are typically 80 inches tall and 32 or 36 inches wide. If your opening is non-standard — common in older KC homes — measure the rough opening and buy accordingly.

Can you replace just the door without replacing the frame? Yes — that’s a slab door installation. If the frame is in good condition and square, we fit a new slab into the existing frame. If the frame is damaged or significantly out of square, a pre-hung unit is usually the cleaner solution.

Do you install smart locks or keypad entry at the same time? Yes. If you’re replacing a door or just the hardware, we can install a smart lock, keypad deadbolt, or traditional lockset as part of the same job.

What areas do you serve? Kansas City and surrounding suburbs including Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Independence, Overland Park, Leawood, Lenexa, Shawnee, Olathe, and Prairie Village. [See all service areas →]

What’s your minimum charge? Our minimum call-out charge is $194. Most door repairs and standard interior door installations fall within or just above the minimum.

Do you guarantee your work? Yes. If a door we hung sticks, binds, or fails to latch due to our installation, we come back and fix it.
